Windows 2000, also well known as W2K is an operating system designed, created by Microsoft and released on the 17th of February, 2000. Windows 2000 is the successor to Windows NT 4.0 and was produced as a part of the Windows NT family of operating system. Windows 2000 is based on the Windows NT 4.0 kernel and is often referred to as Windows NT 5.0. Windows 2000 contains over 29 Millions of lines of code written basically in C++ with over 8 million of those lines coded just for the drivers. It is also one of the biggest commercial projects ever built. Windows 2000, designed to engage small business professionals and also to appeal more technical and bigger business market for the purpose of which the NT was designed.

Windows 2000 is known to be more stable than Windows 98/NT system and is less apt to crash.  About four editions of Windows 2000 was released by the company and they were as follows:- 1)Windows 2000 Professional, which aims at business as well as individuals of all sizes and is the most economical choice; 2)Windows 2000 Server- aimed at medium to small business which can function as Web Server and it can also be a part of two way symmetric multiprocessing system, 3) Windows Advanced Server- created with an aim to become a network operating system server and 4) Datacenter Server- aimed at providing 16 SMP and up to 64 Gb of physical memory.      .

Minimum System Requirements for Windows 2000 Professional System:-

  •    CPU:- 133 MHz Processor
  •    RAM:- At least 32 MB RAM
  •    Hard Drive:-At least 650 MB of hard disk drive space
  •    The optical drive will need DVD Drive for Windows installation through DVD
  •    VGA or higher resolution
  •    Standard Sound Card
  •    The requirement at least Windows 95, 98 NT 3.5 or 4.0 for an upgrade
  •    100% compatible Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard

Minimum System Requirements for Windows 2000 Server System:-

  •    CPU:-133 MHz Processor or equivalent
  •    RAM:- At least 256 MB RAM
  •    Hard Drive:- At least 1 GB of hard disk drive space
  •    The optical drive will need CD/DVD Drive for Windows installation through DVD/CD
  •    Standard Sound Card Support
  •    At least VGA Resolution or higher
  •    Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard compatibility
  •    Windows NT Server 3.5 or 4.0 for an update

Minimum System Requirements for Windows 2000 Advanced Server System:-

  •    CPU:-Intel Pentium 133 MHz Processor or equivalent
  •    RAM:-256 MB RAM
  •    Hard Drive:- 1 GB hard disk space
  •    CD/DVD Drive support
  •    Sound Card compatibility
  •    Full mouse and keyboard compatibility

The Windows 2000 is the last version of Microsoft to showcase the Windows NT designation and it is also the last version where the desktop, as well as the server operating system, share the same name. The Windows 2000 was succeeded by the Windows XP which was released on October 2001 and also by the Windows Server 2003 which was released in April 2003.
